FareShare North East is a food redistribution charity, located in Westerhope, Newcastle upon Tyne. We work in partnership with the UKs largest food redistribution charity, FareShare, to source and redistribute quality, good-to-eat surplus food, which would otherwise have gone to waste. We believe that no good food should go to waste, turning an environmental problem into a social solution.
What’s Happening In The UK?
£14 billion food which could be eaten is thrown away by the UK each year and 15% of this food waste is in the food chain before people can access it. At the same time food insecurity is a major problem as 30% of households with children worry about running out of food each month. 8.4 million people in the UK struggle to get enough food to eat. This is where FareShare North East comes in.
Fighting Hunger & Tackling Food Waste Since 2010
Back in 2010 we started with two vans, delivering surplus food to approximately 30 charities and community groups in the region. Today, we have seven vans on the road, nearly 100 regular volunteers and deliver surplus food to over 200 charities and community groups.
We have grown exponentially, and as a result of this, in July 2020 FareShare North East became an independent registered charity, after a decade-long partnership with Changing Lives. Last year, we prevented approximately 1,650 tonnes of good-to-eat surplus food from going to waste by redistributing it to organisations that support those most at risk in society.
