Something BIG is coming…
As the holiday season approaches, the need for food assistance in the North East is at an all-time high. To combat this, FareShare North East is proud to announce its participation in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, which will run from 3rd December to 10th December.
The North East is facing a severe food insecurity crisis, with food poverty rates over 10% higher than the national average. Alarmingly, one in three households here struggles to access nutritious food, underscoring the urgent need for support.
Meanwhile, 4.6 million tonnes of edible food are wasted across the UK each year – enough to feed everyone in the country three meals a day for nearly two months.
But these aren’t just statistics; they reflect real, lived experiences of hardship. And they’re experiences we’re dedicated to changing.
We have the solution
As part of the Big Give Christmas Challenge, every donation made between 3rd December and 10th December will be doubled, allowing your generosity to stretch even further this holiday season. Thanks to the incredible support of our pledge partners, Newcastle Building Society and Charles Clinkard, every donation made during this week will be matched, helping us get one step closer to our goal of raising £14,000 for a much-needed new delivery van.
Our vans travel across the North East – from Berwick in the north to Redcar in the south – ensuring that rescued food reaches individuals and families in need. With your support, this new van will help deliver 350,000 extra meals to those who need it most, bringing nourishment, hope and relief to thousands of people across our region this Christmas.
How far can your gift go?
In just one small week, you can make one big impact. Thanks to the Big Give match funding, your donation will be doubled for free!
With your help, we can get rescued food to over 221 font line community groups, such as Sprouts. As Debbie from Sprouts shared, “The impact of the cost of living crisis on people here has been massive. We’re seeing more and more people needing support for the first time.”
19% more food waste is produced over Christmas than at any other time, help us get it where it’s needed.
